Big Announcement - The Royalty Cinema is BACK!

THE ROYALTY CINEMA WILL POP UP FOR CORONATION WEEKEND

The Royalty Cinema, a new pop-up cinema, will make its debut in Gosforth Central Park during the King’s Coronation weekend (6-8th May), giving people an opportunity to gather together to celebrate and enjoy some firm family favourites as well as fundraising for a new children’s play equipment in our Gosforth Central Park.

Working in partnership with Urban Green Newcastle, our new exciting event will see a giant screen being temporarily installed in the park for up to 200 people to enjoy at each screening. As well as films there will be food, coffee and ice cream vans at the event and Etto cafe in the park will be providing barbeque food and refreshments from its terrace. There will even be a Hair braid and Glitter bar so you have no excuse but be dressed for the occasion!

Aptly named The Royalty, our new pop up cinema is not only a nod to the King’s Coronation but also to Gosforth’s much loved Royalty Cinema, which closed its doors in 1981 after 89 years.

“Our new owners of Gosforth Shopping Centre want to make the centre a hub of the local community and improve not only the retail experience but also the surrounding areas, hence the fundraising for the children’s play area,” says Shopping Centre Manager, Georgie Scott-Batey.

“We’ve been working with Urban Green Newcastle to come up with collaborative ideas and settled on the idea of a pop-up cinema whilst evoking fond memories of a much loved cinema in Gosforth. It’s nearly 90 years since it first opened and what better time to bring back a cinema called the Royalty than on the King's Coronation weekend.”

The weekend will kick off with a free event on Saturday 6th May at 11am – showing coverage on the large screen of King Charles III Coronation. Bring a picnic, pull up a camping chair and sit back and Enjoy.

The Coronation will be followed by screenings of family favourites like Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Greatest Showman and Top Gun: Maverick, plus a further free event on Sunday 7th May for the Coronation Concert.

There will be limited deck chair seating for some of the events but people are invited to bring blankets/camping chairs and picnics to watch the cinema in the open air.

Carol Pyrah, Chief Executive at Urban Green Newcastle, said; “We’re so excited to be welcoming the Royalty Cinema to Gosforth Central Park for the Coronation weekend. Not only is it a great chance to celebrate with the local community who regularly visit the park, but it’s also a fantastic way to raise funds we need to improve the play park for Gosforth’s younger residents.”
